What You Can Expect

Tauranga Shore Excursion: Lord of the Rings Hobbiton Movie Set Tour

Lunch at the Green Dragon Inn

Located about an hour from Tauranga, where you’ll be picked up at the port, the Hobbiton Movie Set is situated on rolling farmland that depicts the Shire, a region inhabited by hobbits in The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit.
Departing the Bay of Plenty over the Tauranga Harbour Bridge, you’ll journey through the Kaimai mountain range before your group arrives at your Waikato destination near the town of Matamata.
Meet a specialized guide for a 2-hour tour of the Hobbiton Movie Set, which provides an up-close look behind the scenes of director Peter Jackson’s famous film trilogies. LOTR fans can crouch in front of hobbit holes for photo ops and see structures such as the double-arched bridge, the Mill and the party tree, where Bilbo had his farewell birthday party.
Walk to the Green Dragon Inn, sip a complimentary local ale, cider or ginger beer.
After your meal, leave Hobbiton behind and make a stop at McLaren Falls Park for a bush walk to its namesake waterfalls. Here, your guide provides cloaks, hats and swords so you can dress up as your favorite character from The Lord of the Rings or The Hobbit, posing for photos against this scenic backdrop.
On the way back to the Tauranga port, make a quick stop to taste New Zealand manuka honey, try local ice cream or stop at a beach, if time permits.

The small tour bus picked us up at the cruise terminal -knowledgeable driver gave a running commentary of passing sites and history of the area. As we got closer to Hobbiton, she filled us in on procedures and farm's background. We use Viator for most of our tours around the world. This was one of our best.

This tour was better than I ever could have hoped for! Our driver was waiting for us at the dock and returned us to the ship in plenty of time. She entertained us throughout the drive. Our bus was clean and comfortable. When we arrived at Hobbiton, I felt transported to the magical land of Middle Earth despite throngs of tourists. Our guide did a fantastic job and the landscape was simply gorgeous! I would highly recommend this for anyone whether or not they have any prior knowledge of LOTR!

This was our favourite experience in New Zealand. Eric was a very friendly and knowledgeable tour guide who gave a running commentary on our surroundings, New Zealand history, culture and produce. He picked us up from the cruise port and returned us in plenty of time to board again. Our stop on the way to Hobbiton at Mossop's Honey farm was most interesting seeing the bee hives - tasting the chocolate honeycomb at the bargain price of 1 for 4 pieces is a must! The ice cream was also delicious. Hobbiton was crowded with a tour of around 20 people every ten minutes but definitely worthwhile. There are so many hobbit holes in them there hills! Such a beautiful place and informative tour guide if you can here them from the back of the crowded group- best to walk up the front. We then stopped off at a waterfall and kiwi orchard on the way back where we dressed up as Gandolf and Galadriel with some really impressive swords. Overall a wonderful experience for us and our two kids aged 7 and 8.

This was a highlight of all the entire shore excursions! The tour was fantastic and I had a great time. I would highly recommend this excursion for anyone who visits Tauranga, NZ
The walk around the movie set was very enjoyable. First of the Hobbiton tour guide was very informative. As we approached each of the hobbit hole, she provided information relating to the character and their part in the move and then gave us a lot of time to take photos. As well, she pointed out many points of interest. The walk around the movie set was very enjoyable and at a good pace to look around and take photos. The whole experience was excellent. We also had time to do some souvenir shopping.
As we were heading back to ship, we stopped at McLaren Falls. Got out of van, looked around, and to take more photos. There was another stop. This time it was at the edge of a field where kiwi fruits to see how they were grown. This was my first encounter to see the kiwi fruits up close, not just in a supermarket. One more stop, this time it was at a local honey shop. We got to see a display of bees in their hive behind glass and the queen bee was pointed out. Looked around the shop to see the many uses of honey. Thank you for the manuka honey ice cream cone. It was a tasty treat at the right time.
When we arrived back to harbour where the ship was docked, we had the opportunity to walk to explore the area to take a look at the many shops nearby. When it was time to get back aboard the ship, the walk was a very short one.
