What You Can Expect

Tauranga Shore Excursion: Rotorua Highlights

Rotorua Historic Bath House, Rotorua Museum

Start your shore excursion with pickup from the cruise port in Tauranga, departing Mt Maunganui for a day trip through the North Island’s lake country, sprinkled with more than a dozen pristine lakes. En route to Rotorua, hear insightful live commentary on board the vehicle as you travel past the lovely waterfront and Bay of Plenty.

A short drive brings you to your first stop in the town of Te Puke, considered New Zealand's kiwifruit capital. Visit Kiwi 360, a horticultural theme park where you’ll taste kiwifruit products including juices, wines and liqueurs.

Next, drive past rolling farmland and pine tree forests then disembark for a brief stroll to Okere Falls, a small town popular for its waterfalls and lakefront views. Stop for lunch beside Lake Rotorua (own expense) before visiting the thermal wonderland of Whakarewarewa in the afternoon. Follow a Maori guide through a lunar-like landscape of hot springs and mud pools, and see the eruption of Pohutu Geyser. You’ll hear how the indigenous people used the jets of steam from the bubbling cauldrons for everyday functions.

Discover more Maori customs at a Maori village, starting with a traditional welcome. Enjoy a performance of song and dance, including the warlike haka. After, go sightseeing in Rotorua city. View the Government Gardens, historical bath house and natural hot springs at Whangapipiro (Rachel's Pool) as well as Lake Tarawera if time allows.

Complete your Rotorua shore excursion with the return to Mt Maunganui, following a scenic route via the Tauranga city center before crossing the harbor bridge to the port.

One of our favourite stops on our recent cruise. This tour was awesome, the living Maori village is amazing, and the cultural performance a must do.

We had Phillip as our tour guide. As it turned-out, we were the only tour participants. Phillip took us to all the great sites in Rotorua plus a couple of hidden gems on the way back to Tauranga. The time spent at each location was perfect. We saw geysers, Maori, kiwi farm, redwood forest, lake and waterfalls. The cafe by the lake was beautiful and the food reasonably priced. We would highly recommend this tour.

My husband and I had a great time on this tour. The guide was knowledge, friendly and accessible. No question went unanswered, although there was little need to ask additional questions. The Maori Village Whakawawerawa was amazing.

We arrived in Tauranga on a cruise ship and I had booked this independent of the cruise company so I was a little nervous of how it would work. But it was absolutely fine, no problems at all. We got off the ship and were met by the tour organisers who directed us to a minibus where we met our driver, Nick. He took us, along with 6 other cruise members and another family of 3, to a Maori village where we had a very interesting tour of the village with its thermal springs and geysers. Then we watched a traditional Maori performance before moving on to Rotorua and lunch. On the way back to Tauranga we stopped off at a kiwi farm and sampled some kiwi juice. Nick was very informative on the journey, the ride was very comfortable and he was very accommodating of his passengers needs. Excellent all round. Highly recommend this tour.
