What You Can Expect

Tauranga Shore Excursion: Rotorua Highlights

Rotorua Historic Bath House, Rotorua Museum

Start your shore excursion with pickup from the cruise port in Tauranga, departing Mt Maunganui for a day trip through the North Island’s lake country, sprinkled with more than a dozen pristine lakes. En route to Rotorua, hear insightful live commentary on board the vehicle as you travel past the lovely waterfront and Bay of Plenty.

A short drive brings you to your first stop in the town of Te Puke, considered New Zealand's kiwifruit capital. Visit Kiwifruit Country, and learn more about this special fruit.

Next, drive past rolling farmland and pine tree forests then disembark for a brief stroll to Okere Falls, a small town popular for its waterfalls and lakefront views. Stop for lunch beside Lake Rotorua (own expense) before visiting the thermal wonderland of Whakarewarewa in the afternoon. Follow a Maori guide through a lunar-like landscape of hot springs and mud pools, and see the eruption of Pohutu Geyser. You’ll hear how the indigenous people used the jets of steam from the bubbling cauldrons for everyday functions.

Discover more Maori customs at a Maori village, starting with a traditional welcome. Enjoy a performance of song and dance, including the warlike haka. After, go sightseeing in Rotorua city. View the Government Gardens, historical bath house and natural hot springs at Whangapipiro (Rachel's Pool) as well as Lake Tarawera if time allows.

Complete your Rotorua shore excursion with the return to Mt Maunganui, following a scenic route via the Tauranga city center before crossing the harbor bridge to the port.

We really enjoyed this tour with Sue the bus driver. She was very knowledgeable and shared points of interest with us as we made our way to Rotorua. What an amazing place this is. Don't forget to go to the boiling mud location that our Moari guide did not take us to, although her tour itself was very well done.

This excursion was the longest we undertook, leaving the berthed cruise ship early in the morning and being returned late afternoon. The small vehicle trip 11 tourists with the driver/guide made for an intimate excursion and we saw a considerable amount of the land between Tauranga and Rotorua, some 80 kilometres from Tauranga. In Rotorua we visited the Living Maori village of Whakarewarewa and experienced a cultural performance by the village inhabitants and were guided around the various sights in the village by an experienced Maori guide. A highlight of the tour was the corn on the cob cooked in the murderous ripples of Parekohuru - the largest hot springs in the village - whether it was the form of cooking or the corn itself that was so sweet, remains a mystery to be answered by the next visitors. On the return trip to Tauranga a short call to a Kiwi Fruit Farm was made and it was interesting to see how the vines are grown close up. The Kiwi Fruit icecream made here was enjoyed by all and sundry. Altogether another very worthwhile excursion.

An excellent excursion with Stephen, our driver/guide who was informative and amusing! The excursion was all it had promised and Stephen was brilliant, he gave lots of facts about the places we visited and gave consideration to all of his passengers and our individual interests and needs. I would thoroughly recommend this tour.

The tour was very good. Went to a Redwood forest, visited a Moari village. The Moari village was on thermal hot spots and had locals guide us through the village. They did a show of their native dance.

We visited a Maori living village and saw a Maori cultural dance. We also had a Maori guide to talk about their livelihood in the village. We then had a scenic drive around a lake in Rotorua and a kiwi farm. Both the driver and the guide gave detailed descriptions/comments along the way. Additionally, we were given a bottle of water to quench our thirst and kiwi ice cream in the kiwi farm.
The entire excursion lasted about 6 hours. All in all, it's great value and a wonderful experience.
