What To Expect

Meet your guide just outside the famous seafood market. Visit the popular Tsukiji Outer Fish Market and browse the shopping and sample tasting areas. As you wander the aisles of this colorful, chaotic market, observe everything from giant tuna to sea urchin to octopus arranged for sale.

Once you’ve had your ‘fill’ of seafood, proceed with your guide to the gourmet cooking studio of one of Asia’s largest culinary schools, boasting more than 150 studios throughout the region. Finish your session by digging into your tasty creations for lunch, enjoying your meal accompanied by your choice of wine, plum sake or soft drinks. Leave with a full stomach and a newfound appreciation for the wondrous world of Japanese cuisine and its top-notch ingredients.

Learning to make Rolled Sushi
Craig_M, Nov 2022
We had a great time, both our guide and cooking instructor were very knowledgeable, informative and helpful. I enjoyed the actual cooking and making the sushi the most so I could maybe try it at home.

Great Outer Market Tour & Cooking Lesson
Christina_S, Jan 2020
We were a group of two families (four adults, two kids and two teens) traveling together in Tokyo. Everyone had a wonderful time on this half-day tour! It was enough to get a flavor of the local market/culture without losing the interest of the kids and teens (and husbands). We met Lucy at Tsukiji Hongan-ji. There was a little bit of a misunderstanding when we booked the tour. We thought that since the two families separately booked the same tour at the same time that we would be on the same tour, which is not the case (have one person book everyone on the same purchase to ensure that you're with the same group or contact the tour operator immediately afterwards and ask if they can put your reservations together in the same group). Despite our mistake, Lucy and the other guide made same quick phone calls and were able to get all of us together with the same guide. Lucy navigated us through the fish market with ease. She took us to some vendors of interest, but also let us stop at whichever vendors caught our eye. She was very patient with us. We never felt rushed, but she also kept things moving along. She did a great job of explaining to us the different foods/ingredients that we were seeing and also answering any questions about what we were seeing and being offered to try. None of us spoke Japanese. Lucy's English was great and she was very helpful translating for us. Afterwards, Lucy took us on a short bus ride over to the cooking studio. Masayo was the primary instructor with Lucy's assisting. We learned how to make Tomago, nigiri sushi, a rolled sushi and miso. Masayo explained each step very clearly in English. Our kids had a great time learning how to make sushi and they all ate everything that they made. Our daughter came home and asked if we could purchase a "Tomago pan" so she could make Tomago at home. Everyone in our group said they would recommend this tour to their friends.

Many thanks for your review!! We apologize not being able to get your two groups together originally. We try to be flexible as much as possible for our guests, so we are glad that this time turned out to be OK. We hope your experience will be a good memory of Japan.
Fish, Food and Fun
Hermine_v_Stetten, Oct 2019
First part was a tour over the outer fishmarket with our awesome guide yoko who showed and explained us everything. We got a lot of information about traditional japanese food and could try everything (e.g. little dried crabs tasting like spicy crackers). After the tour we visited a modern equipped cooking school to learn to prepare a typical japanese meal. We had great fun and learned a lot with our enchanting chef Hiromi. Our conclusion: all thumbs up!!

Both the guide and our teacher were so good and informative. They took their time to explain all things and answered all our questions. If there's only one guided tour you do, do this one!

Did this tour with 5 other friends and it was amazing. The fish tour of the market was interesting and we learned about the local food and customs. We took the bus to the cooking studio where we made sushi rolls and an an egg omelette. We ate and tasted sake. Everything was wonderful.

Market Tour was a complete waste of money and time
jmillsnj, Jul 2018
Our tour group consisted of 14 tourists and 3 tour guides, yet our lead guide did not have any means of standing out in a crowd (flag, umbrella, etc.). My daughter and I stopped to buy something, I made eye contact with one of the guides to ensure that someone knew we were stopping, and when I turned around after completing my purchase (less than a minute later), the group had vanished. My daughter and I spent the next 30 minutes searching for them, to no avail. I finally called the number on my confirmation page (my cell phone plan does not include out-of-country calls, so I still don't know what that call cost me), and the guide that answered seemed to not even know we were missing from the group. We arranged a spot to meet and then she spent the next 10 minutes or so giving us a quickie tour because I was so angry, I was ready to burst. We hardly experienced any of the fish market--we absolutely could have done better just going on our own. We did enjoy the cooking class afterward, but not enough to give this tour a good rating.

We booked the day tour and lucked out because we were the old two people who had a reservation so we ended up having a private tour and cooking class. Our guide was so helpful and knowledgeable about the market. When traveling to Tokyo, seeing this market is a must do. The cooking class was such a fun experience as well. At the end we were able to try some Japanese traditional drinks as well. I would recommend this to anyone looking to learn more about Tokyo and sushi making.

Our tour guide, Kyle was fabulous. He showed us many stalls and foods and due to his knowledge and rapport with the stall holders I felt comfortable and safe in trying different types of foods. The sushi class was fun, really enjoyed making the Japanese omelette which tasted really good and the tastings of the different types of drinks.

We had a great time exploring the outer market with our guide Naumi . She was informative and fun. The market is fascinating we went back the next day and did some more exploring . We then made our way to our Sushi class. This was great fun and our instructor was so fun and allowed us to get really hands on. It was a nice touch to have Kyle there and the video he made was a nice momento. Eating what we made and sharing it with our fellow travelers was a fun way to end the experience. This is a great experience.

I absolutely loved this tour! I went on it with my partner, and we really enjoyed the experience. The guide was really friendly and knowledgeable. The visit to the Tsukiji outer and inner markets was a great experience, and especially the inner market we wouldn’t have been able to visit it on our own the way we did with our guide. We had plenty of photo opportunities which were great memories. The cooking class was fun, and we learned how to prepare sushi and some traditional recipes. Definitely worth it and highly recommend it!
