Itinerary

Day 1: Ubud (B)
Arrive at your hotel in Ubud at any time, since there are no activities planned until an important welcome meeting at 6pm. (Please look for a note in the hotel lobby or ask reception where your orientation will take place.) If you choose to upgrade your tour to include a round-trip airport transfer, you will be picked up at the Ubud airport.

After meeting your guide and small group in the evening, venture into Ubud – Bali's largest Hindu town and the country’s center for art and culture – with a guided visit to the Gianyar night market. Soak up the informal atmosphere of the teeming market and get your first taste of the Balinese culture as you try some of the local cuisine (own expense).

Once you’ve had your fill, your guide will accompany your small group to a Balinese cultural performance. As you watch a traditional Kecak dance performance – a cultural highlight for many visitors to Ubud – enjoy the Ramayana story of Prince Rama; you’ll learn about his quest to rescue his kidnapped wife, Sita, with the help of the monkey army. Listen to the sounds of chanting (without musical instruments) as fires burn and ‘monsters’ appear from the darkness to perform their part in the story.

Overnight: Artini 2 Cottages in Ubud or hotel of comparable class

Day 2: Ubud (B)
After a delicious breakfast, your local guide will take you on an approximate three-hour tour of the Ubud area, where you can witness the day-to-day village life of the local people. Pass rice fields and a valley of alang alang (wild grass used for making roofs on traditional buildings) on your way to nearby villages, where you’ll view beautiful handicrafts and locally made paintings.

Later, explore Ubud’s botanical gardens – Botanic Garden Ubud – a 14-acre (6-hectare) property filled with jungle-like vines, flowering butterfly gardens and Balinese plants such as cinnamon and vanilla. Your sightseeing tour ends in central Ubud, with plenty of free time to explore the many cafés, galleries and craft shops on your own.

Overnight: Artini 2 Cottages in Ubud or hotel of comparable class

Day 3: Ubud – Sidemen (B)
Following breakfast, hop on a bicycle for a guided three-hour ride through the backstreets of Ubud and beyond, riding through hilly lanes, small villages and rice paddies surrounding the town – a great way to meet more local folks and enjoy sweeping views.

Along the way, your guide will make plenty of stops for marvelous photo opportunities and breaks if needed. (Please note: Bicycle helmets are not included and can be difficult to rent locally, but feel free to bring your own. A support vehicle is also available for those who need a rest.)
You’ll have many opportunities to stop and admire some of the intricately carved temples en route to Sangeh – home to a centuries-old temple nestled in a grove of towering trees – where your bike ride concludes.

In the afternoon, board a minivan and head for the hills on an approximate two-hour drive to Sidemen, a scenic and peaceful village set against the amazing backdrop of Mt Agung, Bali's highest peak. Enjoy the higher elevation with a slightly cooler climate and meet friendly villagers as you hang out in this charming town, far from the tourist crowds.

You’ll have the rest of your day free to explore on your own, or choose from optional activities such as a traditional dance performance (own expense).

Overnight: Villa Uma Agung in Sidemen or hotel of comparable class

Day 4: Sidemen – Batur (B, L)
Embark on a guided three- to four-hour morning walk around Sidemen after breakfast, visiting local cottage industries where you’ll learn the art of songket (hand-woven silk or cotton textile) weaving at a local workshop. Absorb more outstanding views from the foothills of Mt Agung, cool off in a nearby river and eat a traditional bungkus (take-out) lunch before continuing your journey higher into the mountains.

Your guide will drive your small group along the crater rim road to a fishing village on the edge of Lake Batur. Located about two hours away under Mt Batur – a 5,633-foot (1,717-meter) active volcano rising from a stark and spectacular caldera – the crystal-clear lake supports the local fishing industry, while many villagers work as guides for the volcano climb.

Overnight: Hotel Segara in Kintamani or hotel of comparable class

Day 5: Batur – Lovina (B)
Rise early and venture with a local guide into the cool, eerie darkness to climb Mt Batur – a 1.5- to 2-hour ascent – and reach the summit in time to witness a stunning sunrise over the valleys of Bali. On a clear morning, it's possible to see all the way across the Lombok Strait to the peaks of Lombok's Mt Rinjani from Mt Batur, designated by UNESCO as part of a Global Geopark Network.

If you’re feeling adventurous, it may be possible to hike an extra hour or so along the narrow paths right around the volcano’s rim. After your descent, enjoy an optional soak in the area’s thermal hot springs (own expense) with incredible views over the lake and caldera.

Later, hop back in your vehicle for the onward journey from the mountains to the small coastal town of Lovina, located approximately four hours away and a great base for exploring the north coast of Bali. Famous for the playful dolphins that inhabit its waters, Lovina is a wonderful place to enjoy fine food, a traditional massage or a night out on the town.

Overnight: Angsoka Hotel in Lovina or hotel of comparable class

Day 6: Lovina (B)
Awaken in the beachside fishing village of Lovina, with plenty of opportunities to explore the area with your guide. At dawn, take an optional trip on an outrigger boat to watch the fabulous dolphins enter the bay (own expense). You’ll also enjoy a day snorkeling on a pristine coral reef around Menjangan Island – part of Bali Barat National Park – a short boat ride from the coast (included).

Overnight: Angsoka Hotel in Lovina or hotel of comparable class

Day 7: Lovina – Bedugul (B)
Enjoy breakfast with your small group and then leave the coast behind for the picturesque mountain town of Bedugul, nestled in Bali's cool and misty highlands. En route, visit the lively Seririt Market before spending the rest of your morning soaking in the tranquil, sea-green pools at Banjar Holy Hot Springs, where warm water gushes from the mouths of stone-carved nagas (dragons) amid a beautifully landscaped and lush tropical garden.

Before traveling inland, continue to the tiny hilltop village of Munduk and walk with your guide through clove and coffee plantations to discover a hidden waterfall. Enjoy a refreshing dip in the falls and take in the excellent views across the hills of Bali and the beaches of the northern coast (seen on a clear day).

When you reach Bedugul, your guide will inform your small group about the geology of the volcanic lakes and mountain ranges, which comprise the picturesque region covered in lush vegetation. Relax at your accommodation during the evening or explore the lovely town on your own.

Overnight: Strawberry Hill in Bedugul or hotel of comparable class

Day 8: Bedugul – Ubud (B)
After breakfast in Bedugul, visit nearby Lake Bratan for great views of Pura Ulun Danu Bratan, one of Bali's most beautiful temples, situated on a small island in the center of the glassy lake. Put on a traditional sarong and visit the classical Hindu-Buddhist temple, dedicated to the goddess of the lake and said to protect Bali from evil spirits.

Return to Ubud in the afternoon with your small group, arriving at your accommodation after a two-hour drive by minivan. Spend the rest of your day at leisure, perhaps browsing for souvenirs or enjoying a final Balinese banquet before saying good-bye to newfound friends made on your majestic island adventure.

Overnight: Artini 2 Cottages in Ubud or hotel of comparable class
