What You Can Expect

Malta Sightseeing Tour: Blue Grotto, Marsaxlokk and Ghar Dalam

Visit the famous Tarxien Temples and the Blue Grotto!

Depart from your Malta hotel and travel by luxury, climate-controlled coach to the dazzling Blue Grotto, a cluster of brightly lit caves on Malta’s rugged south coast. Here, make the most of free time to explore Wied iz-Zurrieq harbor and the shoreline independently, or choose to join an optional boat excursion (own expensive) to see inside the caves.
After, continue to the typical Maltese fishing village of Marsaxlokk and Birzebbuga. Amble about each of the postcard-perfect villages and snap photos of the candy-colored iuzzus (fishing boats) moored off the coast.
Next, travel to Marsascala where you’ll stop off for a 3-course lunch with a glass of wine at a local restaurant. Then, travel onward to the UNESCO-listed Tarxien Temples. These megalithic temples date back to prehistoric times and are famous for their mysterious carvings and complex layout.
Finally, visit Ghar Dalam. Nicknamed the ‘cave of darkness,’ this prehistoric grotto is the earliest evidence of human settled in Malta. Explore the public areas with your guide and then enjoy free time inside the Ghar Dalam museum.
Your day tour concludes with a drop-off back at your hotel.
Please note: the sea around the Blue Grotto is rocky, so boat rides are subject to cancellation if the weather is bad.

Even though we were unable to get on the boats for Blue Grotto due to windy conditions the views were spectacular.

Fur our first day to tour around Malta, we joined a tour group that brought us to the Blue Grotto (where we met the fisherman who caught the biggest great white shark ever! His name is Alfredo and I thought he was joking at first but when I googled him, he did catch a 23.4 ft great white on April 17. 1987 - he still had dark hair then). Needless to say, the Blue Grotto was amazing and the light blue waters are just fantastic!

We had a beautiful guide named Janic and she also brought us to the Tarxien Temple to see some ruins, and also to a cave called the Ghar Dalam. This cave was the source of many pre-historic fossils including an elephant species that got locked in the island of Malta during the melting part of the Ice Age.

In the cave, it was a bit dark and slippery in some areas, so it was no surprise when an English lady slipped and fell...but the tourist was okay and was actually with us again the next day.

During this tour, we also met a wonderful couple from Germany and they became our FB friends. We had lunch with fresh fish (included in the tour) in Marsascala, where you get to take pictures of the cove.We also enjoyed Marsaxlokk where we saw the colourful "Luzza" boats with "eyes" painted on them to protect the fishermen. This area also had many souvenir vendors and we were allowed to have some time to shop.

Probably my favourite tour we took in Malta. Excellent tour guide. Lunch was very nice, three courses included freshly caught fish. We were fortunate to have a small group on this tour. Only complaint was AC not very good in the van. Also several of the tours we took including this one, had clients who understood different languages. It got tedious for us, and I think exhausting for our guide to have to go back and forth repeating between French and English. I have been to Marsaxlokk and Blue Grotto several times before and will go back again. Very pretty and picturesque. Learned more about Malta's prehistoric background at Tarxien and Ghar Dalam.
