Overview

Take a course on mask making from a master artisan in Venice, and learn about the history of this ancient tradition. You can choose from a production class or a decoration class, or you can even take both. In the production class, learn how to make your own papier-mâché mask, and in the decoration class, you can paint or use materials to decorate your mask. No matter which option you choose, you get to bring home your creation—just in time for Carnival.

Nice but expensive for the overall experience

The workshop was good. The artist was nice and helpful, but for the amount we spent, it felt underwhelming. We merely painted a mask with acrylic. I was hoping for more like feathers, sequins, glitter, etc. I also wish I could have booked for just my two sons, but an adult had to join. However, my sons love their masks and its a nice keepsake for them.

Make your own mask, ya right!

I added this experience at the last minute. I am artistic and thought it might be a fun way to meet others and to bring home a mask that would remind me of my trip and would be something I created. When I got to the class, I was the only person. The man teaching had me select a mask then he drew a division on it and asked me to select 4 colors of paint. I painted each section while he spoke on his phone to several different people rather than interacting with me. I found this very awkward as I was a solo traveler that was the only one taking the class. At first I thought it would be an extra special time but instead it was just me painting between the lines of a mask. I also thought that I would be able to decorate the mask by adding glitter, feathers or ribbon but no, I just painted the mask. Once painted and dried (which doesn't take long) the teacher (I wish I could remember his name but I was so unimpressed, I have forgotten it) then took my mask and proceeded to make decorative swirls with another kind of paint. I could have easily created the look as I made wedding cakes for a living and did a similar design, which I mentioned while I was painting (between phone calls). At the end, this was an expensive waste of my time. It would be good for children, however.

The instructor was great, but I do wish that I could have decorated the mask more myself for the amount charged. We put on about two coats of paint and then he drizzled the squiggly lines on it and said we were done. Was expecting to place ribbons, glitter, and such, but to no avail.

Fun mask decorating class

A wonderful experience! Nicolo was attentive and offered expert guidance. The class was made simple and straightforward so that even children would enjoy it. My husband was not sure this was for him but ended up very pleased with his mask and the experience. I highly recommend.

This was terrible, we were painting in the lines like toddlers. My mother that came with me is an artist, but the host drew lines on the mask, allowed us to pic colors and paint in the blocks. He then completed the decorations. We asked if we can have some creative liberties, but then he said we can do it when we are home as he is expecting another group. We did not consume a lot of his time with trivial things, most of the time he was in the restaurant across from his shop. We were waiting for him to return. This is not a workshop.

Absolutely lovely afternoon for adults and kids

It was a really lovely experience. The activity is held in a tiny workshop with only 4-5 people. Super relaxing and intimate. Nice way to spend the afternoon. The gentleman who runs the activity has been doing it for years - he’s very pleasant and will talk with you or leave you and your family at peace to paint away - whatever you prefer. You never feel rushed. Definitely take the time to ask about the masks he makes - he lights up and tells you about the work involved in making them and it makes you view the masks differently. For example, we learned that some of the decorations on the masks were designed by a jeweler, others were bought by a gallery in NY. Enjoy!

My 11 year old son and wife both enjoyed making their masks. It is a small shop which is nice as it limits the number of people who may be taking the class at once (really, more than 4 would be impractical). The owner was very nice and encouraging during his teaching.

So fun! We meet Giorgio at his shop, which has beautiful masks all over, and were put to work! Giorgio allowed us to pick our own design and colors, and he supervised as we created our masks. He also gave us the history of masks in Venice/Italy, which was fascinating to learn about. This was a truly unique experience that my husband and I would highly recommend!

Great experience for our family. And with the help of our instructor our masks came out amazing especially my 6 year old sons. It is an easy activity that allowed us to relax a bit from the hustle of the city. A bit challenging to find the shop so allow extra time but so worth it.

Fun experience but shop owner was not very friendly. In full disclosure we were there during Carnival so it was crazy busy but the atmosphere was not overly welcoming. The experience itself was fun. I would definitely give it another try when the city is not so crowded and Carnival customers are not flooding into the shop.

This was a great experience. Located in a small studio in a building built in the 1200’s, the father and son duo were fantastic! We weren’t rushed and we brought in our Aperol Spritz and draft beer and sat down to create our masterpieces. It was super fun!!

A really great experience in a truly authentic workshop. Owner was very friendly and kind and took lots of time to show us all the steps, even giving a history on Venetian Masks. The experience was very enjoyable and unique. You really focus on painting the masks, even picking the mask shape and colours. Despite initial worries about how they would turn out the owner worked some magic on the decorations to make them look great! You also get to keep a lovely souvenir of your visit.

I HIGHLY recommend this experience. I was in Venice for a little less than a week and when you have so much to see, time is of a essence. Nicolas was great, very nice and explanatory, fun to talk to and candid. This experience gives you a taste of Venice of the old days during the Venetian Mask Carnival, at their shop and with your own touch, don't worry they won't let you walk out without a nice piece of Art with a touch of your own, which -YES- it's included! My advice is that you wait until you go here so that you buys all the masks your heart desires and use the discount they typically give you for signing up for a class (in addition to the included mask you made you get to take home free to you, don't let anyone want to buy it from you, it happens!). Any additional masks you buy, they can nicely pack for you. Most will be very resistible because most have hard materials inside like wire and paper mache center, it will make your trip. I took mine in my carry-on, though, and put small garments around it for extra cushion. Go, what are you waiting for? They have limited space. ~Eric S. from Texas, USA.
