What To Expect

In the morning, meet your instructor — a professional chef — and a small group of no more than six at Venice’s famous Rialto Bridge. Set off together to shop for ingredients at the Rialto open-air market, one of the city’s oldest and liveliest. Let the season and market offerings inform the day’s menu as you browse vendor stalls piled high with fresh produce, seafood, meats, and cheeses.

With raw ingredients in hand, take a short stroll through charming backstreets and squares to reach the historic Palazzo Contarini delle Figure, where the cooking lesson will take place in a private apartment. Tie on an apron, roll up your sleeves, and get to work in a well-equipped kitchen as your instructor takes you through all the steps to prepare a typical Venetian lunch (see Itinerary for a sample menu).

Learn how technique and ingredients come together to form delicate flavors and textures while preparing a multicourse menu of authentic pasta, vegetable, and meat dishes. When the cooking is done, sit down with your fellow chefs for an intimate homemade feast accompanied by wine and other beverages.

I had a fabulous day cooking with Barbara. She was a wonderful guide and expert cookery teacher. I was lucky enough to have lots of hands-on experience although I left her with the washing-up. I would thoroughly recommend this tour to experienced or novice cooks as the tips I picked up will be invaluable. I am going to make zaleti for my work colleagues when I get home.
