What You Can Expect

Musica a Palazzo 'Traveling Opera' Performance in Venice

Witness an enchanting opera in an intimate palazzo setting

The renowned performers of Musica a Palazzo carry on the historic tradition of traveling opera with unique, intimate performances in the luxurious surroundings of Venice’s Palazzo Barbarigo Minotto. The elegant salons of this 15th-century palace have been lovingly restored to their original splendor and provide a historic backdrop for scenes from Italian operatic classics. Choose from adapted versions of The Barber of Seville, La Traviata or Rigoletto, a selection of popular romantic songs (see Itinerary below for details).
On the night of the performance, make your way to the historic palazzo in central Venice, which overlooks the Grand Canal. Upon arrival, you’ll have the option to purchase a libretto to read a translation of the words in your selected opera. Then, take your seat among the small audience and admire the palaces’ ornate surroundings and period furnishings bathed in the soft glow of candlelight. When the show begins, you’ll be immersed in the sights and sounds of arias, duets and live accompaniment as the performers expertly enact scenes just feet or meters from where you sit.
Instead of a traditional set change, you will get up and move to a different salon along with the ensemble with each new scene or act. This lends an interactive element to the show and allows you to appreciate the magnificent surroundings of several different salons. Toast your evening out with a complimentary glass of Prosecco, juice or soda during one of two brief intermissions. At the end of the 2-hour experience, you’ll have a chance to buy a CD or DVD of the opera you just witnessed before heading back out into the magical Venetian night.

Such a fun experience. Perfect to opera new comers as there isn't the stiffness of a large opera house. The protagonist are within touching distance and literally sing to you. With the baroque style rooms and the quartet who would just need to wear some white wigs you feel as having gone back in time.
We went to check out the location during the day while meandering through the many narrow streets of Venice and found it a bit tricky to find, as it's situated in a tiny alley with just the name engraved on a door bell. A hidden little treasure chest .

This took a bit of finding on the web as well as a tad hard to find in Venice-- I recommend finding the Palace in the light then going for the evenings performance. Yes, there is a sign but it is not obvious. All of that said, it was an intimate, relaxed and innovative operatic performance. The performance is held in a private home and both the actors and audience move to new vantage points and rooms with each act. Each night it is a different Opera. We saw Rialotto. The intensity of performance was exhilarating. For a couple in our group this was their first opera. They were overwhelmed. Opera now stands a a new performance art for them. I believe this was one of the highlights of our vacation

This is a must do tour! Alessandro was so informative, funny and passionate about her work. From the kosher food we had at Gam Gam, the wine and chichetti, homemade pasta and gelato was excellent. Do not eat before! I learned so much on this tour. It felt like a night out with friends. Bravo!

A most unusual set up in the impressive Palace venue. The Acts moved from room to room with the audience. Very close and intimate performance in amongst the small audience of around 70 people. Very polished performance and one we shall never forget.

WOW! Is there any better way to experience an opera than this?!! My wife's ears had not released the pressure from flying into Marco Polo airport and we were worried she wouldn't be able to hear well enough. HA! The performers are often so close that you could reach right out and touch them, hearing was no problem and these performers are worth hearing! One huge recommendation that I need to share with my fellow Viator travelers is to be sure to read online the story of the opera you are about to experience to help bring it to life with understanding. Also, be sure to give yourself plenty of time to find the location as it is not obvious: a sign on a building in the open square just as you are coming over a bridge does point the correct direction...keep walking toward the Grand Canal and there will be an alley-way to your right that leads to the door to the house. Authentic, personal Venetian setting with extremely talented performers make this tour is an absolute must when in Venice!
