What You Can Expect

Day Trip to Salzburg from Vienna

Mirabell Gardens

After early pickup from your central Vienna hotel, leave the Austrian capital and journey west toward Salzburg. Pass through the rolling hills and vineyards of UNESCO-listed Wachau along the River Danube — an area famous for the Benedictine monastery of Melk — and hear information about the region from your guide.

Stop for breakfast (own expense), and then continue into another UNESCO World Heritage gem: the Salzkammergut region of mountains and lakes that played a starring role in The Sound of Music. Admire the lakes and villages, and hear fascinating snippets about the area’s history before arriving in Salzburg at around noon.

Take a walking tour of the UNESCO-protected Old Town with your guide, seeing landmarks including the Cathedral, Mozarteum and St Peter’s Cemetery, whose colonnades famously provided hiding for the Von Trapp family in the 1960 musical.

Wander along the cobbled Getreidegasse shopping street, and learn about Salzburg’s most famous former resident, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, as you pause outside the composer’s house.

See the Mirabell Palace and its gardens, the backdrop to the famous 'Do Re Mi' scene in The Sound of Music, and take in the views from here up to the Hohensalzburg, the hilltop fortress looming over the city.

After your roughly 1.5-hour tour, enjoy about two hours to explore independently. Perhaps delve into the cobbled alleyways to shop, enjoy a late lunch (own expense) or sightsee further, perhaps visiting Mozart’s House or St. Peter’s Abbey.

When it’s time, rejoin your guide and relax on your scenic ride back to Vienna. Your tour concludes with a drop-off at your central hotel in the evening.

Great guide, great day with a little snow thrown in to make it extra special. Christmas markets were good.

Nice day trip excursion, me and my wife are Sounds of Music fans, that's what it's really all about, though there are very few spots where the film is heralded during the trip, just a lake view and the fountain where Maria does her thang, so you have to look at it from a touring perspective, i.e. nice quite faraway city to visit and enjoy nice sights, it's not as if Maria and the von Traps are everywhere you look, if you know what I mean :

We had an excellent one day trip. It was long but worth every moment. Other than a bit of fog near the top of a mountain, we had perfect weather. Our tour guide was extremely knowledgeable and kept us entertained while educating us. The trip itself was well timed with stops. My only suggestion would be that the guide take into consideration the age of his charges and perhaps not walk quite so quickly. Salzburg is a jewel with so many historic buildings. Highly recommend the tour.

We traveled to Salzburg from Vienna for a day. The 300-km drive was extremely comfortable and our guide Robert was very helpful and knowledgeable. On the way we stopped at the lake district which feels straight out of a poster picture. Salzburg, though small is a beautiful place to walk around and enjoy the cobblestone streets. It was nice to see the birthplace of Mozart. Overall, a great trip that I would strongly recommend.

The weather was foul, but the tour guide was excellent, the content was good, and we were lucky it was a small group. However it absolutely poured down in the city centre and made things less than average. The tour though was good, the scenery alone worth the value, and would do this again !

We had booked for 7 people and we all had an amazing experience. Our tour guide Thomas was amazing. We learnt a lot and the free time was perfect. I would definitely love to go back to Salzburg and stay for a few days, it is truly amazing. We saw so much so it was a little rushed, but I am still grateful as we did see a lot. The scenery was spectacular from the bus.

My family loved this tour! The tour guide was funny, personable, and happy to answer any questions we threw at him from the silly to the serious. He gave us a great quick tour of the area and then gave us ample time to explore the city on our own. It was a really fun trip where we feel like we got a good taste of what Salzburg has to offer. Now we want to make a vacation solely focused on the city next time!
