Our group of 4 did this tour during at port stop from a cruise ship. We were a private tour which was perfect! Peter our guide and driver was great. We were picked up right at the port and returned with time to explore the pier. He got us to the Glowworm Cave right on time for our tour and straight to the front of the line. Then it was on to Hobbiton. Peter made perfect time. We made it to Hobbiton right on time for our amazing tour to begin. We had a Tip Top time on this tour and would highly recommend. Peter did a great job. Thanks for making our day!
The Glowworm caves and Hobbiton are not to be missed, these were our favorite attractions in New Zealand. This was a long and busy day with a LOT of driving, about 3.5 hours. We were in a brand new, beautiful van with plenty of room. Our driver was entertaining and informative. He dropped us off at the caves with our ticket, then we found our way to the start point. We were delayed because of some confusion over check-in then added onto another larger group for the tour. This cost us an extra half an hour, which made us late for Hobbiton. We had to rush through lunch only to wait on our tour due to a bus breakdown. Hobbiton is a busy, very commercial operation. There is no wandering around. You are assigned to a large group and walked through the attraction. The crowds on the day we were there were overwhelming. We had to fight for a table at the Dragon Inn, and then did not have time to finish our drinks before heading back to the ship. However, even though we spent more time driving than we would have liked, it was worth it to see both attractions. The Glowworm Cave was an experience unlike anything I have ever seen and I've seen plenty Hobbiton was enchanting and beautiful in spite of the crowds.
The tour operator was very good about making changes to accommodate scheduling issues. Our tour was delayed at Waitomo, making us late for the scheduled buffet and tour at Hobbiton. She was able to reschedule the Hobbiton portion and we had a private luncheon.
We did have to find her after we got off the cruise ship. Instead of being located with the other tour operators, she was on the side street sitting in her van, waiting for the tour driver to arrive.
