Overview

Matiu Somes Island, in the center of Wellington Harbor, has been many things: an internment camp during World War Two, an animal quarantine center, and a pā site for Whānganui-a-Tara Māori. Today it is a reserve for some of New Zealand’s most iconic wildlife. Wander around the island looking out for tuatara, Cook Strait Weta, and native birds such as Little Blue Penguins before taking a ferry back to the city. An easy ferry ride from Queens Wharf, a trip to Somes is a local favorite.
  • The buildings on the island are a reminder of the many histories of Somes Island
  • Enjoy a rare glimpse into some dark periods in New Zealand's story
  • Find peace only a short ferry ride from the center of town
  • This small group tour is ideal for encountering uncaged New Zealand wildlife
