What You Can Expect

4-Day Lake District Discovery Tour from Windermere including Lake Cruise, Muncaster Castle and Ravenglass and Eskdale Railway

Explore the stunning Lake District on this 4-day tour

Soak up the scenic splendors of England’s famous Lake District on this 4-day tour. Your experience combines free time for you to enjoy this gorgeous region as you wish, plus two full-day tours by minivan, with an expert guide.

On Day 2, enjoy a Ten Lakes Spectacular day trip to ten of the area’s best-loved lakes including Rydal Water, Thirlmere and Bassenthwaite. Then, the next day, explore the epic mountain passes of the western Lake District, including a journey on the famous Ravenglass and Eskdale narrow gauge railway.

Your tour includes a 3-night stay at the comfortable 4-star Lindeth Howe in Bowness-on-Windermere, a charming hotel set in manicured gardens overlooking Lake Windermere. Daily breakfasts and dinners are included as part of the package, as is round-trip transport between the Lindeth Howe and Windermere train station or your Windermere or Bowness hotel.

Day 1: Bowness (D)
Start your 4-day tour with a pickup from Windermere railway station or, if you’re already in Windermere or Bowness, from your hotel in either town.

Board your comfortable minivan and travel to the Lindeth Howe Country House Hotel, your base for three nights. This charming 4-star hotel on the edges of Bowness sits in gardens overlooking Lake Windermere, and occupies a Victorian house once owned by Beatrix Potter.
Check in and spend the rest of the day at leisure, perhaps exploring the local area, walking into Bowness, or relaxing in the hotel gardens, before enjoying dinner at the hotel tonight.

Day 2: Bowness – Ten Lakes Spectacular Tour - Bowness (B, D)
After breakfast, meet your driver-guide at your hotel and head out in your shared minivan on your Ten Lakes tour. The tour showcases the best of the Lake District, taking you through magnificent mountain scenery to ten stunning lakes and other beauty spots.

Along the way, admire the surrounding fells and talk to your guide about the history, events and people that have shaped this much-loved National Park. Skirt the banks of Lake Windermere, and stretch your legs in the pretty village of Ambleside. After a photo stop at Rydal Water, continue to Grasmere and Thirlmere reservoir before traveling through the Borrowdale Valley to Bassenthwaite Lake and then negotiating Honister Pass.

Next, visit the village of Buttermere and travel onward to Keswick via Crummock Water. Enjoy free time to walk around and enjoy lunch (own expense) in this charming market town before heading for Castlerigg Stone Circle. Inspect the stones as your guide recounts how they were probably placed here in around 3,000 BC.

Before your tour ends, enjoy a scenic lake cruise and a photo-stop at a picture-postcard waterfall. Then, return to Bowness, arriving at your hotel in time for dinner.

Day 3: Bowness – High Mountain Passes Spectacular Tour - Bowness (B, D)
Following breakfast, set off on your High Mountain Passes Spectacular tour. Focusing on the western Lake District, this full-day tour follows the path of Roman Emperor Hadrian’s legions in the 2nd century AD, when they built roads through the high passes.

Thrill on the steep ascents of Wrynose Pass and Hardknott Pass — the latter England’s steepest road — and pass the ruined Roman fort of Hardknott Fort before absorbing epic views of Upper Eskdale and Scafell Pike, England’s highest mountain.

Continue to Ravenglass and enjoy a ride on the miniature Ravenglass and Eskdale narrow-gauge railway. Gaze at the ancient woodlands and fells of Eskdale from your cozy carriage, and after lunch (own expense) at a country inn, stop to contemplate the famously beautiful views over Wastwater, England’s deepest lake.

Visit Muncaster Castle, a magnificent 14th-century house famed for its flower-filled gardens and World Owl Centre, home to some of the world's most beautiful and rare owls. Stroll around the gardens and visit the center; or if the house is open, enjoy an interior tour (own expense). Please note an entrance to only Muncaster Castle grounds and World Owl Centre is included.

Lastly, admire Coniston Fells and Coniston on route back to your hotel, where dinner is served this evening.

The two day trips were a great introduction to the lakes district. A large area was covered with gifted guides with lots of local knowledge. I'm planning my next trip back to complete some of the splendid walks. My accommodation was excellent: the staff were friendly and professional, the room was clean and comfortable. The stand out component of my stay was the 3 course meal served each night. It was innovative and delicious, a job well done

This was a wonderful, and unforgettable trip. The Lindeth Howe Hotel was quite charming, the food was wonderful. The staff from the Mountain Goat, the travel service which took me on my daily tours were knowledgeable and adept at navigating the narrow roads. This is a good tour for the single traveller.

This trip was well worth every penny. As a first time solo traveller I was nervous about joining a tour and staying in a hotel on my own. But all my fears were put to rest from the moment I arrived. The hotel was fantastic. My room had superb views, was spotlessly clean and the hotel staff could not have been more helpful and accommodating. The tours were fascinating, the tour guides were interesting, amusing and just generally great. I cannot sing high enough praises for everyone involved who all contributed towards making my holiday one that I will not forget in a long time. Even the delightful waitress in the hotel restaurant. I arranged at the last minute to go on an additional tour and this was arranged without any problems as well

Hotel was good although staff, with some exceptions, were not very well trained, unsmiling and some with poor English.
Tours were excellent with an outstanding guide from Mountain Goat called Derek. He was knowledgeable, friendly and amusing. Content of tours was also very good.
