The High Adventure: High Mountain Passes Spectacular from Windermere

The High Adventure - High Mountain Passes Spectacular

Leave the Windermere area by comfortable, air-conditioned minivan, and journey into the western swathes of the Lake District. Admire the rugged scenery, and travel through the Langdale Valley, a favorite of rock climbers and walkers, as your guide shares information about the region and its culture.
Ascend both the steep Wrynose and Hardknott Passes, and soak up the spectacular views of the remote fells as you trace the narrow, twisting roads through the peaks. Stop at the ruins of Hardknott Roman Fort at 1,000 feet (304 meters) up on the fells. Take the opportunity to walk around the crumbled, 2nd century complex, built by the Emperor Hadrian, and marvel at the awe-inspiring views to Upper Eskdale, Scafell and Scafell Pike, England’s highest mountains.

Arrive in the Eskdale Valley, and take a memorable ride on the heritage Ravenglass and Eskdale railway, affectionately nicknamed ‘La’al Ratty’ (little railway). Trundle through picturesque woodlands and countryside, and stop for lunch (own expense) at one of the quaint valley inns.
Afterward, continue to Wastwater, a beauty spot once voted as commanding ‘Britain’s favorite view.’ Drink in the panoramas that encompass Wastwater, England’s deepest lake, and the surroundinghigh screes and mountains, including epic Scafell Pike.
Then, stop at 14th-century Muncaster Castle, owned by the Pennington family. Stretch your legs around the castle's gorgeous, 18th-century gardens, famous for their azaleas, camelias and rhododendrons; and admire the castle exterior as you stroll. If you wish, pay a visit to the World Owl Trust, home to a variety of prize owls and hawks, located in the grounds.
Then, relax on your return journey to Lake Windermere, passing beautiful Coniston Water and the Coniston fells before your tour ends back at the start point.

A great way to see a few lakes and the roads that take you there.
The castle was remarkable.
Fantastic views of mountains and lots of sheep.
Friendly, informative and. (Most importantly) competent driver.
Plus got to ride a little steam or diesel train.
Would not even bother renting a car.

Knowing we had only limited time in the lakes, my SO and I decided to book this trip to maximize the time we had. I can't say enough wonderful things about the experience. We were treated to the most breathtaking scenes imaginable. While we were kept to a schedule, there were many opportunities to get out of the van to take pictures and otherwise bask in the beauty of the locations. Many thanks to the driver and staff!

I don't know what happened, but I did give a review almost as soon as I got back. It was really lovely, and I would recommend it to anyone. The views were to be seen to be believed. Lovely tour guide too!

Derek, the driver, was both entertaining and open to suggestions as to our interests. His handling of the roads and the rain all the while telling us about the area and history was kind of amazing. It was pouring rain sometimes sideways, but he made it interesting all along. I couldn't take many pictures inside the bus but he stopped a couple of places so that we could get out and take some even in the rain. Then we went on this adorable little railroad, Ravenglass and Eskdale Railway. We went about 4 stops just to give us a taste of it. Since it had stopped raining by then, I chose to go on the open but with a roof car while the others went into the enclosed cars. It was fine. Then off to Muncaster Castle to look around, see the castle and a bird show which was quite nice. We ate there on our own. After that, it was a long drive back to the hotel over dales and one lane roads and sometimes terrifying vistas. The sun came out briefly before the clouds came back. It rained off and on most of the day. It was a great tour. Derek was terrific. Would take it again!

This tour is a fantastic way to see the Lake District. We had an exceptional tour guide/bus driver who knows his stuff. He was able to maneuver the tight corners of the tiny roads. He made many stops for pictures beautiful scenery and I could not have been more pleased. This tour is a great experience and must do.
