What You Can Expect

Shwedagon Pagoda Walking Tour

Shwedagon Pagoda Walking Tour

Get a sense for the fascinating religious rituals and the rhythms of daily life in Myanmar as you visit Shwedagon Pagoda, one of the country’s most sacred Buddhist shrines, during this small-group walking tour. There’s no better way to get a sense for the deep religious heritage and vibrant cultural traditions of Myanmar than by immersing yourself in this incredible Buddhist site.

Start your day with pickup at your Yangon hotel at 8am, continuing first to the teashop Daw Cho Mohinga Shop for a typical local breakfast. Your stomach now full and ready to start the day, continue to the golden Shwedagon Pagoda for an in-depth exploration of this fascinating monument. Explore some of the lesser-known features and hidden walkways that few visitors ever experience. Beginning at the base of the hill leading to the pagoda, wander up and through the collection of monasteries, workshops and markets that surround the site, uncovering unexpected insights into the culture of Myanmar locals from your guide.

Stop to make an offering to the monks that reside at the shrine, proceeding through Shwedagon’s back door to learn about the history of the pagoda in Myanmar’s spiritual life. Wander the sprawling grounds of the temple complex, during which time you’ll stop by a local fortune-teller and hear about the nats (Burmese spirits) that characterize the country’s ancient religious practices.

Then stare up in awe at the gold-covered, 325-foot (99m) pagoda and its stupa. The pagoda is covered in so much gold leaf, in fact, that locals once told the occupying British forces that it contained “more gold than in your Bank of England.”

Finish your exploration at Aung Thu Kha Restaurant for lunch before receiving a drop-off back at your Yangon hotel.

My tour with guide with Su Thandar Oo was a delight. Su was very knowledgeable and professional and it was conducted in a very friendly and easy manner. I gained much information about the Pagoda and Buddhism. Su also took me to a local breakfast restaurant which was a real taste of Yangon. This tour is highly recommended. Thanks Su.

Although our walking tour started badly (primarily, we believe, due to poor communications from Viator to the local tour operator), the tour operator quickly recovered and corrected the situation. This is characteristic of a truly professional and customer oriented organization. We enjoyed the walking tour very much and especially want to commend Ma Thein (Nann Thandar Thein) and Ko Tun (Aung Myo Tun) for their superior customer service. They truly made our visit to Yangon a pleasure and ensures that we will return and use Viator in the future. The driver, Ko Moe, they personally provided us for our last morning as compensation for the initial mix up (which was not their fault) was above and beyond anything we expected.

2 star rating: It was OK, but could have been better January 2016

The tour was personal and well organized. The guide was a very pleasant man, very friendly and well-informed.

Afterwards i learned that a fortune-teller visit was part of the tour but we did not do that. Also 125 USD is far overpriced.

Overall it was ok but way too expensive.
