Make the short 15-mile (24-km) bus journey from York to Castle Howard, a grand residence surrounded by beautiful greenery. As you approach, Castle Howard’s statuesque façade and the large masonry dome that tops the building are sure to amaze you.
With your pre-paid entrance ticket in hand, you’ll head inside and explore the site at your leisure. Admire the urns and statue-studded grand entrance before gasping at the grandeur of rooms such as the Great Hall, the Antique Passage and the Long Gallery.
Relish the peaceful ambience of the private chapel and then spend a while perusing the classic paintings that adorn the walls. See masterpieces collected over centuries by the Howard family, and then enjoy Castle Howard’s ever-changing program of display in the exhibition rooms.
After thorough exploration of the building, head outside to absorb the botanical beauty of the gardens: glittering lakes, water features and statues make for an idyllic stroll outside.
Enjoy Castle Howard at your own pace and spend as much time as you exploring during opening hours. When hunger strikes, revitalize with snacks and a drink at Courtyard Café, or purchase a souvenir from the gift shop (own expense).
Loved loved loved this place. You definitely will enjoy it!
Excellent place to visit lots of history. Many statues going back to BC period. Garden good to walk around. Used the tripadvisor voucher. Interesting reception staff said had not seen one of these before. But no trouble getting in.
