Things to do in  Jaipur

Pretty in pink

The capital of India’s desert state of Rajasthan, Jaipur has long been a tourism hotspot, attracting everyone from backpackers to global dignitaries. Many of this UNESCO World Heritage Site’s most popular attractions, from the regal City Palace to the Palace of Winds (Hawal Mahal), are in the salmon-hued city center known as the “Pink City.” If you have time, there are also plenty of things to do in Jaipur beyond the center, from the Indo-Saracenic Albert Hall Museum to the 16th-century Amber Fort (Amer Fort), a gargantuan hilltop castle on the outskirts of town.

When to visit

High season starts in late September and runs through March, the coolest time of year. Some visitors on a Golden Triangle tour (Jaipur, Delhi, and Agra) arrive later in the year, but bear in mind that in October and November, Delhi, in particular, gets a lot of pollution. If you don’t mind heat, consider visiting in August—while this is a monsoon month, Jaipur doesn’t get much rain.

Getting around

Getting around without a car is easy, and in some parts of the city—notably the Pink City—you’re better off without one. It’s usually easy to hail auto-rickshaws to reach things to do in Jaipur, but be prepared to bargain hard. You also can order air-conditioned taxis using the Ola Cabs or Uber rideshare apps, but they sometimes take a while to arrive due to heavy traffic in the central parts of the city. Taxis connect the city with the Jaipur International Airport.

Traveler tips

If you’ve had your fill of rich Rajasthani street food and are in the mood for something a bit lighter, head to Anokhi Café in Jaipur’s upscale C Scheme neighborhood. This hidden-gem vegetarian cafe serves healthy salads and pasta dishes along with tasty espresso drinks and rich, generously portioned desserts. It’s attached to the flagship Anokhi shop, where you can pick up clothing, tableware, and bed linens created using traditional block-printing techniques.
