La Chorrera and El Chiflón Waterfall Hiking Adventure from Bogotá

Get up close to Colombia’s tallest waterfall on this hiking adventure

Take a break from the city for an adventurous day of hiking set among the beautiful outdoor scenery outside Bogotá on this visit to two of the country’s most impressive waterfalls.

Begin your day with an 8am pickup from your hotel in Bogotá, proceeding on for 45 minutes to the East Hills, a series of rolling forest-covered peaks set among the Andes mountain range. As your transportation heads ever higher into the mountains, listen as your guide shares details of the area’s geology, and check out the breathtaking views from the roadside cliffs and chasms below. Pass by the picturesque colonial village of Choachí, and its scenic town square, before beginning your hike.

Start your 3-hour-roundtrip hike through the area’s bright green forests, heading toward your first stop, the waterfall of El Chiflón. Once you arrive at this pounding torrent of water, feel climb behind the falls for a unique view, or jump into the inviting turquoise waters below to cool off. Your guide will provide a local snack to help you refuel before moving on to the next waterfall.

Head back into the forests for a strenuous hike of about an hour to the towering La Chorrera waterfall. The route up to this stunning site offers an opportunity to observe the region’s diverse plant life, including bromeliads, juniper, orchids, sapodilla, cedar and mahogany. Soon you’ll hear the roar of this natural wonder in the distance. Arrive at this 1,936-foot (590m) tall waterfall, taking a moment to get a few pictures and cool off before beginning the return hike.

Finish your day back in Choachí, with a mouth-watering traditional lunch and time for some quick sightseeing. Typical Colombian delicacies you may sample include ajiaco, a chicken and potato soup, or sancocho, a beef, chicken or vegetable stew, in addition to side dishes like meat, chicken, rice and salad. After your meal, take some time to explore the village, surrounded by picturesque mountain views, or head 10 minutes outside the town to a market selling handcrafted souvenirs. Finish your day with a return trip back to your Bogotá hotel.

Please note: this tour involves traveling and hiking at altitudes ranging from 6,309 to 8,530 feet (1,923 to 2,600m) above sea level.

This was a great hike! A little more challenging than I expected but the tour guide was happy to take breaks as needed. The scenery is beautiful and untouched and makes a great change of pace from Bogota without having to travel very far. The tour guides were very friendly and fun to hike with.

Our English speaking tour guide arrived at the hotel fifteen minutes ahead of schedule. He gave us a quick breakdown as to what would be expected. Alejandro was knowledgeable, courteous and he took us on a great half of day tour. We ended the tour with a transport back to our hotel but not before enjoy a traditional Colombian lunch at the nearby home of one of the locals. Only suggestion would be to let people know they should be in moderate health for this hike.

We had a great day hiking to the bottom of La Chorrera waterfall and then seeing El Chiflon on the way back. The trail was relatively easy with only a few steeper areas and we were lucky with the weather that it was not overly muddy. The trail was very well maintained and there were often steps/stones which made navigation much easier. Our guide Alejandro paced the hike well, especially with varying speeds of the hikers. He was knowledgeable about the trees and flowers we passed and was able to answer all of our questions.

The drive to the park entrance was very nice and our driver did an excellent job navigating all of the roads, including the unpaved sections.

Although only 30km from Bogota, it felt like we were much further away. This was one of our favorite days in Bogota!

One of my favorite guided tours in all my travels and it was thanks to our wonderful and knowledgeable guide, Andre. It felt like we were going on a hike with a friend who also happened to know lots of interesting information regarding the flora and fauna we encountered. A must do!!!

The cardio workout on this trip should not be understated - certainly not the choice for the couch potatoes or persons who are not used to the altitude. Overall - we loved it - it was a really great day trip, and the scenery as incredible. Alejandro our guide was very good and very patient. Lunch option was a bit too rustic, but delicious!
