One of three postcard-perfect islands between Lombok and Bali, Nusa Lembongan attracts day-trippers wanting to discover coral-crusted underwater statues and neighboring Nusa Penida’s resident manta rays. With its golden sands, laid-back beach clubs, and zen pace of life, there are enough things to do on Nusa Lembongan to merit more than one day there. Besides snorkeling, scuba, and—for experienced surfers—reef breaks, there’s stand-up paddleboarding and kayaking in the mangroves. The Yellow Bridge to Nusa Ceningan is a classic photo stop on any 2-wheel tour.
Like all the best beach destinations, Nusa Lembongan is most fun during Bali’s dry season, which runs from May through October: Avoid the peak of the wet season from mid-December through mid-March, when trash in the water can spoil that dream snorkeling trip. Winds and waves in July and August occasionally see the fast boats from Bali canceled, so leave plenty of lead time before your onward flight.
There’s no public transit on Nusa Lembongan and nor are there Grab or GoJek rideshares. Most travelers get around by walking, hiring bicycles or e-bikes, or renting scooters, though you can also charter cars for groups. Never ride a scooter without a valid license, full insurance, and a robust, fastened helmet; check lights, brakes, tyres, mirrors, helmets, and horns before handing over cash.
For an authentic taste of Nusa Lembongan’s marine bounty, put the beach clubs to one side and head to Nyoman’s Warung, a simple, authentic, local restaurant on Mangrove Beach north of Jungut Batu. Don’t miss the pepes ikan (fish steamed in banana leaf with herbs and spices), ikan bakar (fish grilled over coconut husks), or fish curry—bring friends and an appetite. The only alcohol on offer is local stalwart Bintang beer.
