Itineraries for Your Trip to Playa del Carmen
2 Days in Playa del Carmen for First Timers
Visiting Playa del Carmen for the first time was what I expected: days on the beach and nights filled with tropical cocktails and tacos. I've been lucky enough to return a few times, which has allowed me to venture out beyond the beach to explore the archaeological ruins and eco-adventure parks nearby. Food is always at the top of my list when heading to Mexico, and Playa del Carmen has plenty of options where the food and the views are top-notch.
With two days in Playa del Carmen, you'll want to spend some time in or on the water. This 2-day Playa del Carmen itinerary for first timers has a bit of everything, making it a cinch to plan.
If you only have time for one thing, make it a cenote swim.
Playa del Carmen is typically hot and humid, with a chance of rain.
You can't visit Playa del Carmen without including some water-based activities in your itinerary. There are a wide variety of options, from snorkeling tours to scuba diving excursions. Water conditions tend to be best in the morning, and you're wise to book this excursion early in your visit in case rescheduling (due to weather) is needed.
Later on, enjoy some time in the water with a visit to some of the many cenotes near Playa del Carmen. These underground swimming holes offer a way to cool off that you likely won't find back home. Excursions that combine a cenote swim with ziplining or all-terrain vehicle (ATV) rides are the perfect way to kick up the adventure while you're in the Riviera Maya.
Playa del Carmen has a vibrant food scene that's best explored as part of a food tour. After such a busy day, you'll love having a knowledgeable local leading the way as you stop at the mercado (market) to see what's in season before heading out to try regional specialties, such as mole and tacos.
Playa del Carmen's location between Cancun and Tulum makes it the perfect spot for a day trip to the Tulum ruins. A morning visit is always a good idea as you'll avoid the afternoon heat and crowds. Choose a historical tour that includes hotel pickup and drop-off, along with an air-conditioned ride to get you there in style.
Fill your afternoon with even more adventure by visiting Xcaret eco-archaeological park or Xplor Park, both just a short drive away. If you're looking for something a bit more relaxed, horseback riding excursions will get you out to explore the jungle. Many excursions include a stop at the end for snacks and drinks before they drop you back at your hotel.
The best way to spend your final evening in Playa del Carmen is on the water. You'll find plenty of sunset cruise options, from family-friendly sailings to party boats that keep the music and energy going well into the night. Looking for another option? A nice dinner at a waterfront restaurant with live music can be just the chill night you crave before heading back home.
