1 Day on Oahu for First Timers

Curated by Margot Biggwho loves exploring Oahu beyond Honolulu.

I've been in plenty of situations where I've had only one day on Oahu (most have involved extra-long layovers). While I've often been tempted to just stick to soaking up the sun in Honolulu and nearby sights, such as Diamond Head, I’ve found that with a little planning you can actually experience a lot in a day, from the lush waterfalls and beaches of Oahu’s North Shore (my personal favorite) to the historic attractions at Pearl Harbor. This 1-day itinerary makes it easy to see plenty of the island efficiently, and gives you enough time to wrap up your day with live entertainment and a Polynesian feast at a traditional luau.

If you only have time for one thing, make it the North Shore.

Even if you visit during the dry season, rain is always a possibility. Pack accordingly.

Morning

Start your morning off with an early swim at Waikiki Beach and breakfast in downtown Honolulu before paying a visit to Pearl Harbor National Memorial. The historic site tells the story of World War II and the December 7, 1941 attacks on Pearl Harbor, which were a catalyst in bringing the US into the war. Don’t miss the chance to take a boat ride out to the USS Arizona Memorial, a floating memorial that honors those who died in the attack.

Afternoon

In the afternoon, head up along the east coast of the island until you reach the North Shore of Oahu, known for its beautiful beaches and small communities. Grab lunch at a shrimp truck and a dessert of shave ice before heading over to the town of Kahuku for an all-terrain vehicle (ATV) and zipline adventure. Finally, visit Waimea Falls, a beautiful waterfall surrounded by botanical gardens, before driving back to your hotel to freshen up for the evening.

Night

Instead of getting dinner at a local restaurant, spend your evening doing something a bit more culturally immersive by attending a traditional luau. Luaus typically include feasts of Polynesian and international fare, and some include a delightful lei greeting. Performances are a big part of the luau experience, too—expect to see hula dances and, if you're lucky, a fire show. One great option is the Mauka Warriors Luau on the windward coast of the island, just inland from Ko Olina—opt for a package that includes transfers so that you can enjoy drinks with your meal.
